Troll Hunter (2010)

A Troll Conspiracy

Following a recent spate of bear killings university students Thomas, Johanna and Kalle decide to investigate and by investigate stalk Hans, a mysterious hunter, in the hope of getting answers. Having tried to shake off his hangers on unsuccessfully Hans agrees that these friends can tag along and video what he does as long as they do exactly as they are told. But these friends soon discover it isn't bears that Hans is interested in but some trolls who have escaped from a secret territory run by the government.

Oh joy another frickin' found footage style movie told through the lens of someone with a camera who with their friends investigate some strange goings on. I tell you what whilst "The Blair Witch Project" wasn't the first movie to do the found footage thing it was the one which caused every film student and their dog think they can do the same. Fortunately once in a while one of these found footage movies manages to surprise by just adding something extra to make it stand out from the crowd and thank goodness "roll Hunter" does.

Now for the most "Troll Hunter" follows the formula of other found footage movies, told through the lens of a camera where we hear others talking, in this take talking in Norwegian. Plus of course a lot of the movie takes place at night because that is when most found footage movies are set. But the thing about "Troll Hunter" is that it is a comedy with a dark, matter of fact sense of humour which continually makes you smile through its daftness. Yet in many ways the daftest thing is that whilst "Troll Hunter" is about trolls I can't explain any of the comedy to you because it is experiencing the humour which makes the movie. I know it is a poor thing to do but trust me when you stick with "Troll Hunter" past the initial set up the comedy pay off is well worth it.

What this all boils down to is that "Troll Hunter" thanks to the comedy is one of the better found footage movies and a lot more entertaining than the usual blurred home video styling which you get in these movies. But it is a movie you have to stick with to benefit from which if you are neither into found footage movies nor foreign language movies it might not be that easy.
