Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez in Machete Kills (2013)

Machete Nil

After an operation goes wrong sure to the arrival of a rival gang Machete (Danny Trejo) finds himself arrested although thankfully pardoned by the President before he dies from being hung. It seems that revolutionary Marcos Mendez is holding the States to ransom with a missile wired to his heart so if he ends up killed the missile still launches and the President wants Machete to track him down and kill him. But all is as always not as it seems as there seems to be some connection with arms dealer Luther Voz which complicates matters.

"Machete Kills" is a movie which quickly shows its true colours as what ever this movie is meant to be becomes a series of set pieces as we watch people die in a series of increasingly bloody ways from heads being chopped off to their bodies torn in two. So yes it is clear that "Machete Kills" aims to be a parody of Grindhouse, almost to the point of it doing an Austin Powers with some of the comedy being more than just over the top. The trouble is that by becoming a parody "Machete Kills" ends up just being set pieces and they quickly out stay their welcome and become a bit tedious.

What this all boils down to is that if you enjoy the ridiculous comedy of blood flying everywhere when bodies are torn in two you might enjoy "Machete Kills". But if you were expecting anything more than just spoof like humour you are going to be disappointed, probably as much as I was.
