Jaycee Lynn and Samuel Potter in Island of Grace (2010)

Fitting In

It is thanks to Meghan (Jaycee Lynn) that her colleague Chris (Samuel Potter) came to Christ and is why he finds it difficult as Meghan has fallen away from church and is more interested in her career, her friends, having fun and the go getting colleague Mark (Matthew Davis). The three of them are put on an important business trip but themselves stranded on an island when the private jet they are flying on crashes in to the sea. It is there that Meghan finds herself having to re-examine her life and what she wants as their situation is desperate and it will take faith to believe they will survive.

Before I get to the review of "Island of Grace" I am a bit confused because in 2008 there was a movie called "Rescued" produced and distributes by the Candlelight Media Group and as I understand it, it was an LDS movie (Latter-day Saints). Then in 2010 we get "Island of Grace" which is the same movie but I believe a repackaged and slightly altered version to make it a Christian movie. Looking at the cast lists on Imdb the cast names are a little different but actually seem to be the same people and when you go on the Candlelight Media Group website they have "Rescued" for sale and it certainly features the same actors from "Island of Grace". It is simply confusing and as I said it seems that they created two identical movies out the same movie with just a few dialogue changes. It means you need to be aware of which version you buy if you want to get it for your family.

Now as to the review of "Island of Grace", well I hate to say this but it is the sort of Christian movie which puts people off of watching them because it is so patronising and poorly acted. Weak dialogue and even weaker acting really makes it hard work despite who ever did the scouting finding some seriously beautiful locations to film at. But what is really a shame is that "Island of Grace" has a very important story to tell as we have 3 opposites; we have Mark who is handsome but self centred and got where he has by a mixture of hard work and using people. We have Chris who also works hard but is walked all over because he doesn't do the dirty on others even if he is frustrated. And then we have Meghan who finds herself torn as she finds the appeal of the secular no rule world, doing what she wants when she wants more interesting that the Christian one especially as she had been going to church since she was born. But the focus ends up lost because the acting is not good enough, the movie jars and sadly the script once again lacks subtlety when it comes to the message it wants to get across.

What this all boils down to is that "Island of Grace" could have been a heck of a lot better than it ended up and suffers from many of the usual issues which Christian cinema has as well as issues down to the repackaging of a movie. And that is a shame as because beneath the problems is a storyline about the issues of being a Christian in the secular world where the temptation may be great and being put upon for being over nice is frustrating.
