Gerard Kearns as Fran in Honeymooner (2010)

Made in Kentish Town

Hell for me would be being tied to a chair and forced to watch "Made in Chelsea", I just don't get the appeal of these sorts of fake reality shows and find them annoying. It is why I was less than impressed having watched "Honeymooner" because this is a movie very much in the same annoying and uninteresting style. As such I am sure there are those who think this relatively short movie about a recently dumped bloke and his mates and their relationships entertaining where for me watching paint dry would have been more interesting.

Just weeks before he was due to marry Fran (Gerard Kearns) finds himself dumped by his girlfriend Emma (Lisa Faulkner) who wastes no time in finding another man. His friends Ben (Chris Coghill) and Jon (Al Weaver) do their best to snap Fran out of his recently dumped funk but with both in relationships yet preferring to flirt with other women they are not the mates he needs at the moment. Between them a lovelorn neighbour and Fran's struggle to get over being shy around girls things are not looking good.

"Honeymooner" is one of those low key movies which try to deliver real life with just that touch of drama and comedy to make it more entertaining. The trouble is that what that really means is we have Fran chatting to his friends in the street, in the bar, in the cafe as they give him advice to find another girl why their eyes stray from their other halves. With the exception of a funny performance from Daisy Haggard as Ben's girlfriend Jess this is all very dull.

But as already mentioned this is very much a movie made in the style of "Made in Chelsea" with more normal characters delivering more banal dialogue. It is why I can see for some it would appeal but despite some nice performances especially from Gerard Kearns who makes Fran surprisingly normal it just isn't what I call entertainment.

What this all boils down to is that "Honeymooner" is a relatively short movie which feels like a more restrained version of "Made in Chelsea" and as such if you are a fan of these sort of fake reality shows you will probably enjoy it.
