Sydney Penny in Hearts Adrift (1996)

Love Boat

Widow Grace Deerfield (Kathleen Noone) is not short of admirers, in the small town where she lives with her daughter Max (Sydney Penny - Pale Rider) there is Harry (Nicolas Coster - Stir Crazy) who would love to marry her. But away from town there is Lloyd Raines (Don Murray) Grace's high school sweet heart who invites her and Max to come to San Diego for the weekend. And in that weekend not only does an old romance get rekindled but a new one forms as Max falls for Lloyd's playboy son Kyle (Scott Reeves - Half a Dozen Babies).

"Hearts Adrift" is the sort of made for TV movie which you half expect to be preceded by the name "Danielle Steel" it is that sort of romantic soap-opera style movie. There is nothing wrong with that and "Hearts Adrift" has got going in its favour an easy to like cast lead by the attractive Sydney Penny. But it does make it the sort of movie which you really need to be in the right mood for or else you will find yourself drifting off or finding it all incredibly cheesy.

Scott Reeves in Hearts Adrift (1996)

Now the storyline is simple as we have the rather far fetched story of mother and daughter falling for a father and son. This leads to various issues from love triangles, jealousy and all the typical romantic cliches you will find in numerous other soap opera style dramas. It also has that less than subtle message that you are never to old love, that you need to grab your chances and several other cliches.

But as I said "Hearts Adrift" does have Sydney Penny who is not only attractive but exudes this air of being loveable which makes liking Max incredibly easy to do. In fact whilst none of the characters have much depth they are nicely cast so that the actors own likeability comes in to effect.

What this all boils down to is that "Hearts Adrift" is just a typical soap opera style romantic drama. It is pleasant enough but it is the sort of movie which requires you to be in the right mood for soap opera style cliches and acting to enjoy.
