Sandra Bullock in Gravity (2013)

Space for Improvement

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a medical engineer, is on her first shuttle mission and she is fortunate to be accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) who is on his last mission before retiring. But when the shuttle is smashed by debris from a Russian satellite blown up by a Russian missile it leaves Stone and Kowalski untethered and floating in space with only each other for support and a slim hope of making it to a space station before the oxygen in their packs runs out.

And so for Christmas little Andy got a fantastic new toy with lots of pretty lights and switches which made the most amazing noises but before his family had even had a chance to think about pulling crackers little Andy was more entertained by playing with the box his new toy came in as the toy was in fact pointless. That kind of sums up how I feel about the movie "Gravity" as for maybe 20 minutes I was entertained and blown away by the stunning special effects which fill this movie but after 20 minutes my interest in it quickly waned as I realised the storyline was nothing more than some sensationalism to act as a vehicle for all the special effects. Oh there is some drama but this is an effects driven movie rather than one with a strong storyline to drive it,

And so whilst I could mention the performance of Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone, haphazardly trying to survive being marooned in space or I could harp on about the out of the world special effects I find myself wanting to do neither. I don't even want to try and make the storyline sound better than it is because truth be told I would be feeding you a pack of lies. And that is the thing about "Gravity", unless you are in the demographic who are happy to enjoy a movie just because the special effects are stunning the rest of the movie, what there is, is disappointing and all a bit too ridiculous.

What this all boils down to is that "Gravity" disappointed me as I thought this was some amazing movie which had everything. In truth it has some extraordinary special effects, in fairness some of the best special effects I have ever seen, but the rest of the movie did next to nothing for me and it has been a long time since stunning special effects made a movie more than okay at best for me.
