Lori Loughlin in Garage Sale Mystery (2013)

Murder, She Sleuthed

Jennifer Shannon (Lori Loughlin - A Soldier's Love Story) is a garage sale savant, she can walk into someone's yard sale and her instincts will allow her to look beyond the junk and focus in on the valuable stuff. And it is these talents which Jennifer uses to seek out goods to sell on her Ebay site and in her antique shop which puts her in competition with other buyers who do the same. It is also those skills which Jennifer decides to put to use when the area becomes plagued by burglaries which she feels may be connected to the garage sales. But her decision to turn amateur detective leads her in to danger when a dead body shows up.

So for those who decide to give "Garage Sale Mystery" a look at because they have read mention of yard sales and Ebay be warned as the whole bargain hunting to sell for a profit has very little to do with the movie. In fact the few scenes of Jennifer going to a yard sale and magically smelling out a bargain is exceptionally corny but in truth the sort of corny you kind of expect from one of these modern made for TV movies.

Andrew Dunbar in Garage Sale Mystery (2013)

What does that mean? Well it means that "Garage Sale Mystery" ends up a modern reworking of a familiar theme featuring a wife and mum turning amateur detective and doing a better job of it than the cops. Of course Jennifer's ability to be more observant than your average bear provides the movie with its lightness such as the scene in which Jennifer walks into the detective's office and picks up on all the clues to him having just moved into it. But with the murder there is also a slight serious tone and of course these types of movies, and there are a few, always see the lead heading for trouble so you know that before the end of the movie Jennifer or her family will have found herself in danger.

Now there is in truth and one good reason why "Garage Sale Mystery" works and that is Lori Loughlin. Loughlin has that attractive/likeable combination going on and kind of convincing as a wife and mother who is comfortably rich and does the garage sale thing because she has a talent for it whilst keeping her busy. Fans of TV movies will have seen Lori Loughlin before but also many of the supporting cast and Rick Ravanello as Jennifer's husband Jason has great chemistry with Loughlin to make them an entertaining couple which also helps keep things light. Strangely in the "Garage Sale Mystery" movies which followed this one the part of Jason was recast with Steve Bacic taking over.

What this all boils down to is that "Garage Sale Mystery" is a typical modern made for TV movie which whilst a murder mystery story is just as much about the lightness and humour. But it is very much about the charm of Lori Loughlin more than anything else to make it entertaining.
