Selena Gomez in Another Cinderella Story (2008)

Gomez Plays Ball

Mary Santiago's (Selena Gomez) step mum just happens to be aging pop star Dominique (Jane Lynch) which isn't as great as it sounds as not only is Dominique an aging diva who treats Mary like a slave but it also means she has to deal with Dominique's daughters, her 2 nasty step sisters. But things turn strange when pop star Joey (Andrew Seeley) decides to go back to school, the school Mary goes to and he turns out to be a lot more normal than the rest of guys in her school. When Mary dances with Joey at the masked dance she drops her mp3 player in a rush to get home leading to Joey trying to find the owner of it.

It is now 2016, 8 years since Selena Gomez made "Another Cinderella Story", the follow up to "A Cinderella Story", and I would not be shocked if we got "Another Another Cinderella Story" featuring who ever the current flavour of the day is when it comes to musical child stars. I say that because after Hilary Duff starring in the first and then Selena Gomez in this follow up it seems the story is the perfect vehicle to showcase a starlets talents.

Andrew Seeley in Another Cinderella Story (2008)

As such "Another Cinderella Story" doesn't take any explaining as we have the handsome prince now a pop star on a sabbatical from performing and the evil stepmother being a washed up diva with a drinking problems. There is of course a masked dance where instead of the left behind slipper we have a left behind mp3 player. But the changes, some minor whilst other major, don't mess with the basics which means the focus is on the characters and of course Selena Gomez which is the whole point.

Now when it comes to Selena Gomez she comes across as cute which of course is one of the main priorities and she also gets to show off her pop star dancing skills. In fairness to Gomez she also delivers her characters cute comedy side as well which adds to the likeable nature of her character. But it is Jane Lynch's comic turn as a wicked stepmother come washed up pop diva who makes the movie with one hilarious scene after another of her being mean and drunk.

What this all boils down to is that "Another Cinderella Story" is a fun little movie which works for all but mostly the Selena Gomez loving crowd. In truth it was better than I expected it to be although not that much better that I would want to watch it again.
