How many Richard Gere & Julia Roberts Movies are There?

Born in 1949 Richard Gere started his movie career back in the 70s making his big screen debut in "Operation Undercover". Since then not only has he gone on to become a big star but also star opposite some including various attractive actresses such as Kim Basinger ("No Mercy" and "Final Analysis") and Diane Lane ("The Cotton Club", "Unfaithful" and "Nights in Rodanthe"). But of course it is Julia Roberts who everyone remembers Richard Gere acting opposite and to answer the question "How many Richard Gere & Julia Roberts Movies are there?" The answer is two, or at least two as of October 2014.

1 - Pretty Woman (1990)

Pretty Woman (1990)

During a business buying trip, millionaire Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) finds him self lost on the streets of L.A. and ends up pulling over to ask for directions. The woman he asks happens to be Vivian (Julia Roberts) a hooker who takes pity on Edward who clearly doesn't know how to drive a flashy sports car and so drives him to where he wants to go. One thing leads to another and Vivian ends up spending the night with Edward in his swanky Penthouse suite at the glamorous Beverly Hills Hotel. Captivated by Vivian Edward offers her an unusual business deal, he pays to have her spend the entire weak with him and escort him to various dinners and functions. But as each day passes it becomes clear that there is something more between them than just a business deal as they enjoy spending time together. The question is can a millionaire businessman and an L.A. hooker really have a future together?

Julia Roberts in thigh high boots, Richard Gere climbing a fire escape with a bunch of roses, the snooty shop assistant who belittles Vivian... I could really go on as "Pretty Woman" is a movie of memorable scenes as well as a memorable soundtrack. But it is also the movie which gave us the pairing of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts who to be honest made "Pretty Woman" popular as guys found Roberts attractive whilst women liked Gere as a silver fox. Of course there is more to it than just that; it is a romantic comedy which is actually romantic and also funny but the combination of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts make the movie. Ironically the original vision for "Pretty Woman" was not a romantic comedy but a drama with Vivian also being a drug addict!

2 - Runaway Bride (1999)

Runaway Bride (1999)

New York journalist Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is in a bar when he hears about Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts), a woman who says "I Do", prepares for the wedding and then on the big day does a runner leaving the groom standing at the alter. Having written a piece on her for his weekly column he finds himself sacked when Maggie learns of what he wrote and demands his boss take immediate action. Angered by losing his job, Ike heads to the back water town where Maggie lives to confront her and get the truth. Not only does he find Maggie preparing to walk down the aisle yet again but finds himself falling for her and behaving like a little school boy as he tries to wind her up, only to get to know the real Maggie in the process.

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts were so good together in "Pretty Woman" that it was only a matter of time before someone found a movie to reunite them. Sadly whilst it certainly benefits from having Gere and Roberts in it "Runaway Bride" was not the movie to recreate the magic which they had 9 years earlier. The trouble with "Runaway Bride" is that it is generic, where "Pretty Woman" worked on Gere and Robert's sex appeal here they are just two regular, okay good looking, people and when the inevitable happens it doesn't have the same magic of say a hooker and a millionaire falling in love.

Runaway Bride review

So as it stands Richard Gere and Julia Roberts have just appeared in just the two movies but you get that feeling that some day someone will come up with a story and an offer which will bring Gere and Roberts together again in another movie.
