Kristen Bell in You Again (2010)

Same Again

At school Marni's (Kristen Bell) life was a misery as she was continuously bullied by the means girls, especially Joanna (Odette Annable) who led most of the bullying. Now having put school behind her and made a success of her life Marni finds the past coming back to haunt her as she heads home to meet her brother's fiancee only to learn that he has got engaged to Joanna. To make matters worse Marni's mum Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis) learns that Joanna's aunt, Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), just happened to be a friend of Gail's from High School till they had a falling it out. Wanting her revenge Marni sets about exposing Joanna as being a cow and the nice girl act she puts on is just that an act.

Yes, Yes, noooooo! Was my repetitive feeling I had as I was watching "You Again" and no I wasn't having some sort of frustrated sexual experience. Nope what I am on about is that every time it found its riff with the humour it would then toss something really naff in to the mix. Take for example of Marni discovering that her brother is for all sense and purpose marrying her nemesis, it is an amusing idea with an early funny cameo as is the revelation that Marni's mum and Joanna's aunt has some history. But then there are some utterly stupid scene tossed in especially ridiculously bad dance scenes. It is what lets the movie down because these set piece scenes end up feeling forced and out of place.

Jamie Lee Curtis in You Again (2010)

Yet despite this there is plenty which is likeable about "You Again" especially the cast with once again Kristen Bell bringing to the movie the cute as a button element. And then you have Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver delivering plenty of older people acting out comedy rivalry. Okay in a way I am saying that what these actors bring to the movie is what we have seen them do before but they are so good at this sort of comedy that you don't mind seeing them playing similar characters and delivering similar jokes.

What this all boils down to is that for me "You Again" is a movie with a fun idea and plenty of fun scenes. But like so many modern comedies is undone by the need to toss in big set piece scenes which end up painful to watch and unfunny.
