Isabelle Carré in Romantics Anonymous (2010)

Confidence in Chocolate

Angélique Delange (Isabelle Carré) is a gifted chocolate maker and has an interview at the local chocolate factory, but unfortunately she is always incredibly nervous and would rather run away than having to go through the stress. The daft thing is that Jean-René Van Den Hugde (Benoît Poelvoorde), the owner of the factory, is also struggling as he is a very emotional man and interviewing Angélique is as much of a trial for him as it is for her. But when you have a shared passion for making great confectionary well maybe two people with personal issues can get passed their issues and do something great together.

Have you ever imagined how a nervous man who profusely sweats when in a stressful situation would cope with a first date? Well in the delightfully French "Romantics Anonymous" he hides a briefcase packed with fresh shirts in the restaurant's washroom. That is just one of the amusing ideas which fills "Romantics Anonymous" and there are many more from talking about conflict in the Middle East because of not knowing what to say to scenes where those emotional barriers start to crumble.

Benoît Poelvoorde in Romantics Anonymous (2010)

And backing up all this humour brought out of life's struggles "Romantics Anonymous" is in the best of ways an extremely French movie. We have scenes of cobbled streets, the cute little factory which is drenched in history and on to Angélique walking in on someone having sex over the kitchen table; it's comical rather than erotic. It is as if the director read the playbook for making a classic French comedy and followed it word for word.

Now there is more to "Romantics Anonymous" than this as we have some comical secrets and the chocolate factory in need of a boost. But again this is one of those movies which to be honest you don't need to read up on, all you need to know is that it is a cute but also classic French comedy with the sort of characters that make you smile and sets which have that wonderful look of age about them which makes them beautiful.

What this all boils down to is that "Romantics Anonymous" isn't the greatest movie you will ever watch but it is one which will just put a huge smile on your face right from the minute we meet Angélique as she walks down the street singing "I Have Confidence" from "The Sound of Music" to give her self a pep talk.
