How to Beat a Bully (2015)

My Dad the Gangster

When his insurance salesman dad starts a new job 12 year old Cory has to move to a new town and start at a new school where despite trying to do what his mum & dad suggests ends up suffering bullying. To deal with this Cory decides to tell a little lie, he says his dad works for the mob and through a series of misunderstanding with his father selling "protection" everyone in town believes him. But Cory's lie is a little too effective as the real mob thinks Cory really is a gangster trying to muscle in on their territory and kidnap him. Now Cory's and his new school friends must find a way to rescue his father.

First things first, "How to Beat a Bully" is a low budget movie with actors which I didn't recognize and a look which made me think this was filmed in the homes of the actors in the movie. Too put it simply this movie lacks the finesse which you get from most movies and it is impossible to ignore it. Now for some it won't be an issue but trust me if you are not use to watching these lower budget movies the styling and you could say lack of itis an issue which you can't get away from.

But if you look past the amateur nature of "How to Beat a Billy" some of it is not half bad. The initial confusion scene where the paper boy sees Cory's father at the head of the table after overhearing ordering them dead, as in some bugs, is actually well written. And there are other scenes which are surprisingly well written although trust me there is more of the sort of scene which makes many a movie fan grown, such as one featuring a neighbour sneaking around on tip toes like he has in some sort of cartoon.

What this all boils down to is that "How to Beat a Bully" may entertain a young audience who will enjoy the jokes but for anyone over the age of 13 the low budget, amateur nature of the movie is unavoidable which is a shame as there is some good writing in there, well once in a while.
