Reese Witherspoon in How Do You Know (2010)

Why Did They Bother

Lisa (Reese Witherspoon - Four Christmases) loves playing softball; she is even on the national softball team. Well she was as all of a sudden she has found herself being cut which has left her in a daze as has her boyfriend of sorts, Matty (Owen Wilson - Little Fockers), as he loves his single life yet seems like he wants to commit to her. But then there is George (Paul Rudd - Dinner for Schmucks) who finds himself in an unusual position due to him working for his father, Charles (Jack Nicholson), but possibly facing prison due to being indicted in a case involving his father. It has led to his girlfriend leaving him and that leads to him meeting Lisa with them ending up getting on.

That plot makes "How Do You Know" a lot more complicated than it truly is; on one hand Lisa has been dating Matty who is very much a bachelor who doesn't really get what being in a relationship means even though he is feeling something for Lisa new to him. On the other hand you have George, the complete opposite of Matty who is more thoughtful and patient although a little bland in comparison to Matty. There is some other stuff going on especially with George considering going to prison to protect his father but rather than making the movie more intriguing it just makes it more muddled.

The thing is that when you realise that for all the subplots "How Do You Know" is simple it then starts to struggle as the romance and the fun of the situation never really grabs you. Instead what you do get quite a lot of is Reese Witherspoon looking adorable, Paul Rudd flashing that smile and Owen Wilson doing his laid back bachelor routine. All of which I have to say feel like they have been lifted out of their previous movies which gives this sadly a forgettable movie.

What this all boils down to is that "How Do You Know" didn't set my World alight and ended up a sadly bland romantic comedy/ drama which was only occasionally pepped up by the appeal of the stars themselves.
